As Brett Scott explains, “large-scale systems ‘dissolve’ communities into large formless bodies of people who just see themselves as floating ‘consumers’, while small-scale systems connect people into more holistic closely-knit meshes”.

This type of voucher

Discount offer

A merchant could offer loyal customers an “early-bird” voucher at a discount price compared to a higher redeem value, but with a specific delayed redeemable time period.

The merchant’s ability to afford the cost of the discount is determined by the net value to the merchant.

Access to early upfront payments could reduce a merchant’s costs & dependence on debt finance. The length of the delay before the value redemption would add value for the merchant avoiding debt costs.

Pre-selling products & services at a discount could attract new customers or increase loyal customer spending. Specific products or services could be promoted to increase their sales / consumption.

The combination of the product, discount & delay will determine the attractiveness for customers.
